Central KalahariSpringbok at Deception Valley - Botswana

This great thirstland is one of the Earth's uncharted wild domains. Each year vast migrations of springbok and oryx come to graze its lush grasslands - a spectacle rarely seen by any but the most intrepid traveller. The Kalahari lions, cheetah, brown hyena and the small mammals - meercats, bat-eared fox and jackals - inhabit the remote, ancient valleys like Deception, Okwa and Parsage.

MoremiLight aircraft over the Okavango - Botswana

This vast bushland between the Khwai River and the Okavango Delta is a mosaic of mopane woodland and water glades. Roan and sable antelope, kudu, wild dog and leopard make up the wildlife with a mass of birds like wattled cranes, eagles and Arnot's chat. The riverine bush is also home to herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest.

The OkavangoMekoro in the delta - Botswana

One of the world's largest wetlands, the Okavango Delta is a maze of papyrus-fringed waterways and rivers. Threading through the remote channels by dugout canoe, herds of red lechwe and the shy sitatunga can be seen. Taking our powerboat into the lagoons of Gcodikwe, there are the unique heronries that support nesting colonies of spoonbills, sacred ibis, six species of heron and a variety of storks - an ornithological extravaganza.

Savuti MarshImpala in the Savuti marsh - Botswana

The Savuti Channel and its open plains, punctuated with umbrella thorn, is home to herds of tsessebe, zebra, giraffe, prides of lion and, near the water holes, elephant. The vista is quintessentially Africa.

MakgadikgadiZebra in the Makgadikgadi Pans - Botswana

Once the greatest lake in Africa, Makgadikgadi is now a series of seasonal pools, panoramic grasslands and palm groves. Some of the largest herds of zebra, wildebeest and springbok migrate seasonally across this expanse - their movements followed by lion and cheetah, hyena and wild dog.

Tsodilo HillsTypical rock art - Botswana

To the north of the Okavango lie the wind-polished rocks of Tsodilo where ancient artists have left a prehistoric record of painted galleries. It is a truly haunting place where bushmen still inhabit the surrounding plains and their ancestral spirits pervade this mysterious landscape.

ChobeElephants in Chobe - Botswana

The Chobe River basin is renowned for some of the largest herds of elephant in Africa. It is home to many thousand. The riverbanks abound with lechwe, puku, giraffe and a mass of water birds like darters, geese and herons.
