Highlights
Kanana Camp
- Kanana Camp (Setswana for "paradise") is located in the remote inner reaches of the Delta.
- Kanana camp
is one of the few camps in the Okavango Delta to have an exclusive heronry
where many migratory water birds come to have their young from July onwards. Kanana is known for its regular sightings of the rare Pels fishing owl.
- The 8 tents (accommodating 16 guests) are built on stilts to insure a good view of the floodplains for all guests.
The common facilities of the camps are also built up on stilts overlooking these floodplains.
- The area is an excellent walking and mokoro area.
Kanana Glide Motorboat excursions to the Xo Lagoon are offered when the lagoon is in flood and game viewing in 4 x 4 vehicles is available.
Game that frequents the islands around Kanana camp include impala, lechwe, lion and elephant
Shinde Camp
- Nestled on a
lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is
surrounded by clear permanent waterways teeming with birdlife and game.
- Shinde is a
small and remote camp accommodating only 16 guests
- Game drives
are in open land cruisers and mokoros (local canoes) are also used. Well
equipped delta craft are used to access Gadikwe Island and the breeding
colonies of herons, egrets, pelicans and storks.
- The area is
especially favoured by members of the antelope family, including the elusive
sitatunga. Shinde is renowned for its cats including a resident pride
of lions.
- Shinde's
silent waters and palm-fringed islands teeming with birdlife and game make
it a very special place for photographers
Best time of the year
- Each season
and every year differs in the Okavango. In the North the seasonal flooding
commences in December then drops from May to October.
- March,
April, May and November are relatively quiet in terms of visitor numbers.
The peak coincides with the dry season from July to October.
- October is
traditionally regarded as the best game viewing month - it's also the
hottest.
- March, April
and November are best for birding enthusiasts.
- High season
is from July to October inclusive
- Mid season
includes May, June, and November
- Low season
is from March and April
-
Kanana is closed January
& February. Shinde is closed December, January and February. Camp Okuti is
an option through the season
- Depending on
annual flood conditions we don’t operate this safari from December to
February inclusive … speak to us about alternatives during the “green
season”
Best Access
- This safari
includes light aircraft charters from Maun to Kanana, to Shinde and return to
Maun.
- There are
direct flights into Maun from Johannesburg and Harare and via links through
Gabarone, Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Nairobi, Dar-es-Salaam,
Lilongwe and Lusaka.
- Speak to us
about arranging your connections and flights to and from Maun.
Tips and notes:
- Shinde is
regarded as the finest location in the Okavango Delta. A small section of
the camp is available for exclusive private us – speak to us about “The
Enclave”, available on a flat fee basis and limited to a single group of up
to six guests.
- This
Okavango Delta safari is the ideal “core” to a Botswana trip – we recommend
that it be done in combination with our Linyanti or Chobe extensions.
- It can be
easily combined with the Kalahari to make up the ideal Desert and Delta
Safari. Remember to ask us about best options when you're planning your
trip.
- Access to
both Kanana and Shinde is by light aircraft - baggage allowances are
restricted to 12kg in soft bags, special allowance for additional
photographic equipment must be made in advance.
